The first European Games in Azerbaijan in June 2015 put the spotlights on the dire human rights record of the country. At least 20 prisoners of conscience are still in jail merely for criticizing or challenging the government. Amnesty International campaigned for the freedom of all prisoners of conscience in Azerbaijan. More than 63.580 people signed our petition for president Aliyev to end the crackdown on civil society. For all who signed: thank you! Azerbaijan must immediately and unconditionally release all government critics who are unfairly imprisoned if the European Games are to leave a positive legacy.
